A Medicare Minute
Q: I have a low income and will be new to Medicare in July. I can't afford all the premiums and costs. What can I do?
A: There are programs to help you with Medicare and healthcare costs, as long as you meet the program's income and asset requirements.
- Extra Help Program. Reduces or eliminates Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D) premiums, deductibles, and co-pays.
- Medicare Savings Program. Helps pay Medicare Part A and B premiums, deductibles, and co-pays—depending upon your income and assets.
- Medi-Cal. Provides health coverage for low income individuals. You can have both Medicare and Medi-Cal.
